Michael gave his usual informative, interactive and fun session on Wednesday 12th November 2025.
Michael outlined Balanced Life which replaced the Steady Steps programme in June 2025 (outlined below). He gave a demonstration of how to safely get off the floor, should you have a fall. He made suggestion for a ‘falls box’ we should have to hand at home (outlined below). And he and Lewis, his assistant took the crowded room through an exercise session. Fitness and upper body strength can be so important. Those that were there got a booklet that given as part of Active Balance classes.
All in all a really wonderful session which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Many thanks to Michael and Lewis.
is a 12week physical activity referral programme, offering a range of tailored classes which build strength, balance and mobility, supporting people to maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life through targeted, evidence-based exercises delivered by specially qualified instructors.
There are three pathways:
Active Balance (a studio based class)
This class uses functional exercises that promote daily movement patterns with a focus on building strength, mobility and co-ordination.
Delivered once a week for 12 weeks, this class is suitable for people who have a clinical frailty score of 5 or less and are able to complete a strength and balance test.
Participants should be able to stand for up to 40 minutes of the 60 minute class, but there will be a chair available for stability if required. Participants will be given their own exercise band and booklet to keep, and they will be encouraged to do some exercises at home between the weekly classes to help them get the most out of the programme.
Dynamic Balance (a circuit-based class)
This class uses a circuit training format, where participants move through a series of stations, each focusing on different aspects of functional fitness that are essential for everyday movements.
Delivered once a week for 12 weeks, this class is suitable for those who can move around unsupported between stations for up to 45 minutes and is aimed at those who are mobile and have greater existing strength and balance.
This class is not suitable for wheelchair users, or those that rely on mobility aids.
Grounded Balance (a floor-based class)
This class teaches people how to safely get up and down from the floor. Participants will practise moving between standing, sitting, kneeling and lying positions.
Delivered once a week for 12 weeks, this class builds flexibility, strength and confidence.
This class is suitable for people who have the strength and mobility to move between the floor and a chair independently. It is not suitable for wheelchair users, or those that rely on mobility aids.
Falls Box
A falls box is key items that help if you have a fall, and are waiting for assistance.
Keep a small, easily reachable kit (perhaps at floor level, but out of the way of general traffic) in key areas of the home with the following items:
- Foil/emergency blanket: To retain body heat and prevent shock, as body temperature can drop quickly when immobile.
- Bottle of water: To stay hydrated while waiting for help.
- Cushions or rolled-up clothing: For head support and comfort.
- Phone or personal alarm device: A reliable way to call for help. A mobile phone can be carried in a pocket, or a personal alarm pendant worn.
- Torch/flashlight: In case of a power outage or if the fall happens at night.
- Basic first aid supplies: For minor cuts or scrapes sustained during the fall (e.g., antiseptic wipes, plasters, gauze dressings, and adhesive tape).
- Important contact information: A list of emergency services and family/carer phone numbers.
