Edinburgh Branch Vice Chair

Join and prepare to lead an enthusiastic team of volunteers that is making a real difference to the lives of people with Parkinson’s and their families in Edinburgh and Lothian.

Your time matters – Committee meetings are held on the first Friday morning of each month, except June and July. Additional time commitments can vary around 10 hours per week.

Venue – Committee meetings are generally held at Liberton Kirk Hall.

This important opportunity needs experienced, appreciative leadership of volunteers, along with reliability and good organisational and communication skills. A collaborative and team focused approach to leading is essential. Some basic IT skills would be useful, too.

What the Branch does – The Edinburgh Parkinson’s Branch is run by volunteers and offers friendship, information and support to people living with Parkinson’s, their families and carers. The Branch is active within the local community and the Committee organises a wide range of regular activities to support health and wellbeing; as well as carer support groups; meetings with guest speakers; and, when permitted, a drop-in café. The Branch and its Research Interest Group promote the annual Parkinson’s Lecture in association with Edinburgh University Medical School and the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine, and maintains strong links with NHS Medical Consultants, Researchers and Parkinson’s Nurses.

As Branch Vice Chair you will:

  • Support the current Chair; and prepare to take the Chair in 2023.
  • Prepare the Committee Agenda and attend meetings.
  • Work closely with the Chair and take increasing responsibility for the smooth running of the Branch and development of services for members.
  • Develop positive relationships and understanding of roles with Committee Volunteers, including Secretary, Treasurer, Chair of The Edinburgh Research Interest Group, and the Chair and Support of the Younger Parkinson’s Group, and with Parkinson’s UK staff.
  • Liaise as necessary with the Parkinson’s UK Volunteer Coordinator to ensure the Branch operates within Parkinson’s UK’s guidelines and procedures.
  • Contribute to management and prioritising of activities for Members, and to regular information and feedback for Volunteers and Members, and for Parkinson’s UK.

Volunteering as Branch Vice Chair you would have the opportunity to:

  • Do something meaningful for people affected by Parkinson’s and their families/friends within the Edinburgh and Lothian area.
  • Meet new people and make new friends, both in the Branch and in the local community.
  • Further develop your leadership, organisational and people skills.
  • Make a valuable contribution to the success of the Branch.

Induction training and ongoing support will be provided by the Volunteer Coordinator, the Chair and Committee members. The Branch has a large number of volunteers who work very well together, and they will ensure that a new Branch Vice Chair has a positive and rewarding experience.
