Side by Side: Photography Project

The following message is from Penny, one of our song leaders:

“Hello singers and Edinburgh Parkinson’s Branch members!

Sally and I have cooked up a summer photography project for you all – we are going to make a video of ‘Side by Side’ and we would like you to take photographs to illustrate the words for us. I’ve attached the lyrics and pasted them below.

The song is sung here on one of our early lockdown videos if you want to sing along:

And here is the lovely video Helen made for us when we first wrote the song, with everyone singing together:

Later in August, Sally and I will record a learn and sing along video of the song so we can get your lovely voices on it as well :). But for now – keep your eyes peeled, and send me any pictures that speak to these words for you. They might be people, places, animals – anything abstract is welcome too – just let your imaginations roll out and see what you find.

As there has been a Parkinson’s World Congress monthly singing session over the last year, I wonder if we might like to send out the call wider for photos and voices to add to our video – would you like to make it a global affair?! Let me know if so and I’ll send the call out wider.

Looking forward to seeing your images! 🙂
Penny
xx”

Side By Side Lyrics

These buttons and laces they drive me insane,
I’m going to be late, we’ll be late again.
We’re a little unsteady, we’re a little unsure,
But there’s hope in our hearts, that we’ll see a cure.

Side by side we’re singing in harmony,
Side by side, together in tune.
Side by side we’re singing in harmony,
Together in tune.

Singing gives me freedom to let myself go,
To visit all the places that I used to know.
We’re living our lives as we’ve always done,
With our backs to the wall and our face to the sun.

Side by side we’re singing in harmony,
Side by side, together in tune.
Side by side we’re singing in harmony,
Together in tune.

This Parkinson’s mask may hide me,
Outside I’m frozen, but inside I’m free.
Through summers and winters, and years that go by,
We’re still who we were, still determined to fly.

Side by side we’re singing in harmony,
Side by side, together in tune.
Side by side we’re singing in harmony,
Together in tune.
