Right to Rehab Coalition

The Scottish Government is gathering views to help inform how they will take forward the Human Rights Bill. The Bill will incorporate a range of economic, social and cultural rights into Scots law for the first time.

One of these is the ‘Right to Rehab’ and this is being led by a campaign from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and in Scotland by Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland.  Many thousands of people across Scotland do not receive the rehabilitation they require. The recent Stroke Improvement Programme stated that an estimated 40,000 people who have suffered from a stroke in Scotland and have been hospitalised don’t receive stroke rehabilitation!

A subgroup of the Right to Rehab coalition has been working on an approach to secure a right to rehab in the proposed Human Rights Bill. For those of you unfamiliar with this, there is a summary.

Chest Heart and Stroke will be hosting a campaign petition on their website, and this will be live from the morning of 31st August.  There is a planned congregation from several charities outside the Scottish Parliament on that same morning, at 10.30am.  Any support is welcome.

James Jopling (Scotland Director for Parkinson’s UK) feel this is as important for people with Parkinson’s as it is for people recovering or living with strokes or heart conditions, so we urge you to please sign the petition on Thursday and if you are free, go along and support.
